“Whoever fears the LORD has a secure fortress, and for their children it will be a refuge.” (Proverbs 14:26)
Storms. They can be terrifying. They seem to come out of nowhere without much warning. Even when you can see them on the horizon, there’s only so much you can do to prepare. Often, we just hunker down in a "safe place" and wait it out. That’s what leads to anxiety and fear – not knowing what the effects of a storm will be. Hearing the howling winds, loud booms of thunder and seeing the intense flashes of lightning can leave us feeling very uneasy to say the least. One of the only things that can bring peace to our minds in times like these is meditating on the fact that our God is sovereign over everything. Absolutely nothing is outside of His control.
As we've witnessed, storms in nature can be fierce and wreak havoc in life-altering ways. And so can the other storms of life. The emotional storms, the relational, physical, financial and vocational storms. How many times have you found yourself smack in the middle of one of these? More often than not I’m sure. It’s the nature of this life.
What we see, hear and feel can make us want to run and hide. We search frantically for that safe place as we wait for the brunt of the storm. It may hit us in the form of a test result, management’s decision or a simple e-mail reply – or the lack of one. It could be any number of things. We hold our breath as we try to figure out the safest place to wait until it all passes. Even then, we're left with the aftermath.
Thankfully, God is our refuge - even in the midst of the storm. The scripture says He’s our very present help in the time of trouble and therefore, we don’t have to fear. (Psalm 46:1)
So, the next time you’re faced with a storm, whether it’s one on the outside or one you’re experiencing in your heart, seek your God and cry out to Him! He is the only shelter that won’t fail us.
Heavenly Father, thank you for being our safe place, no matter what we’re facing. Help us to remember that You alone are worthy of our trust and You have never and won’t ever fail us. May we be confident in the days to come by recalling your faithfulness to us in the past. Amen.
